We are planning to develop a web map of the trees on the AA site once public access is restored to the site, and we hope more people will join us then. We are providing a forum for all those who wish to engage, and we are actively encouraging local community involvement. We are building an inclusive and sustainable model of community ownership for the benefit of the people of Edinburgh. More details on our vision, mission and strategy can be found here. AACT aims to build on the intention of David Ainslie’s original bequest, which recognised that healthy communities need intimate connections with land and nature. Whilst the hospital services will move, health and wellbeing will be central to the uses we propose, which include the following: greenspace for productive and therapeutic uses, education, recreation, and access; an active and open community hub; and affordable housing. An extensive community visioning exercise, funded by the Scottish Government Making Places Initiative, was carried out in 2019, the results of which can be downloaded here. We envision a site whose landscape and uses interconnect to form a complementary, dynamic whole. Any particular use of the site will not stand alone; each will support the others, compounding benefits for the community and the city. He lives near Astley Ainslie, passing through the site almost daily on his way to work. He is interested in the development of various forms of social and technical infrastructure that can be used to track ecological change, such as the use of sensors connected to Edinburgh’s “internet of things” network to monitor biodiversity and visitor use of city parks (ParkLife). Previously, while at the Open University, Jonathan devised several citizen science web projects that crowdsource biological data, including iSpotnature.org which is a social network that rapidly and accurately identifies observations of any species of wildlife. This proposal is open to consultation and the public is being encouraged to comment on it. These comments will be considered before the Plan is finalised. The deadline for comments is 5pm on Monday 20th December 2021. You can download and comment on the plan here. We suggest you at least read Part 1, the introduction, and Part 2, the strategy. If you want to read more about the policies behind the whole document, they can be found in Part 3. The future of Astley Ainslie site as a community resource clearly depends on the Council as well as the NHS. The Executive Committee of AACT strongly believe that the more local people respond to the consultation on the proposed City Plan 2030 the better the prospects are for an outcome which suits the community, supports public health, protects and enhances the greenspace, safeguards the trees and contributes to achieving Scotland’s Net Zero emissions targets while limiting new building development to an appropriate footprint.
