Oral History Project
The Astley Ainslie Oral History Project captured the voices, memories and lived experiences of people connected to the hospital and its much-loved grounds. Through 35 recorded interviews with former staff, patients, visitors and local people, the project preserved over seven decades of stories from a place that has played a unique role in Edinburgh’s history, health and community life.
The report shares what was learned through the project, including the importance of Astley Ainslie as a place of healing, rehabilitation, nature, friendship and belonging. It also reflects on the success of the public exhibition, the creation of a lasting archive with Lothian Health Service Archive, and the ways in which the project helped deepen public understanding of the site’s past and future significance.
Read the report to discover the stories behind Astley Ainslie, the project’s impact, and why this special place continues to matter so deeply to the community.
